TREEHOUSE

TREE HOUSE

The Tree House Suite is nestled between the Milkwood tree tops, accessed by a staircase, towards the renovated rear end of the Mission's House property.

It is a spacious apartment for two guests with a separate entrance. It boasts a en-suite bathroom and seated living area.

A communal courtyard joins it to the traditional Mission's House.

From between the trees, one hears the Atlantic ocean roar and the sun birds sing.

It is quiet and secluded, an old world treasure.

Our History

THE MISSION'S HOUSE HISTORY

The Moravian Missionaries from Genadendal began to visit what is now Onrus, in the early 19th century for renewal and refreshment. They built the sandstone house in 1820 for this purpose. The name Onrus means ‘restless’ referring to the pounding of the surf on the rocky coast.

In the meantime, in 1817, the Cape Government established a leper colony in the Hemel en Aarde Valley (so named by the Moravians). It was badly managed so Lord Charles Somerset asked them to take charge in 1823 which they did until 1845, when it was moved to Robben Island.

It is assumed that they owned the house until 1878 when it was sold to Mrs. Kruger. The present owner Glenda Pope bought the house in 1980 and lived in it until 2003 when she changed it into the Mission House Gallery and Professional Picture Framing Service.

In 2014 Glenda was joined by her daughter Braelea Pope.  They have transitioned the Mission's House and Tree House Suite for holiday accommodation.

GUEST REVIEW

We really loved the tasteful and quirky Mission’s House. Glenda was super helpful and welcoming and was adopted by our girls within minutes! Beautiful art throughout. Light, clean, characterful, well equipped. Everything worked fine. Nice and close to the very lovely local beach.

GUEST REVIEW

I have never felt more welcomed in an Airbnb as I did here in Onrusriver. Hospitality was the best, clean and warm place, cozy courtyard and a lovely village. 5 stars is not high enough to show my appreciation.

GUEST REVIEW

The place is so cozy and lovely that we were secretly hoping for a rainy day as an excuse to stay in. The weather was gorgeous though so we got to explore the area a fair bit. From the ocean side to the mountains and vineyards, there is something for everyone. The scenery is just breath-taking. The place is very private and spacious, definitely more than just a private room. While there is not a kitchen available for use, Braelea and Glenda provide you with some lovely granola, rusks, and coffee/tea making facilities to start your day, which we thought was a great touch. We would definitely come back.
