Meet the artist - Weyers du Toit
Weyers du Toit was born in the Paarl, but grew up in the Western Cape town of Bredasdorp. One of his earliest memories is of lying under the table drawing. This he often did and it became a retreat and a joy to him from a very tender age. His other major memory from childhood is of swimming in the sea next to huge white sand dunes.
Shortly after school he completed a diploma in Fine Arts at the Cape College, with Oils under Liesbeth Guther.
Then followed various different jobs including mission and aid work from a ship (Asia, Africa, Australia, Arabian Gulf), Photography aboard cruise ships (Caribbean, Alaska), commercial diving, overland expeditions through Southern Africa and marine work at the Oceanographic Research Institute. During all of these occupations he often drew in pencil or ink and completed works in oils.
He currently resides in Bredasdorp. His approach to his work is classic with an emphasis on fine drawing as a foundation to be continually strengthened. He finds beauty in the myriad human poses of interaction in genre scenes. Weyers’ love affair and strong bond with the sea , however, often dictates the setting for his paintings which communicate simple statements of humanity. He frequents the beautiful beaches of Arniston to source his paintings and to surf.
Come and see our collection of free hand drawings and oil paintings done by this young and incredibly talented artist. Better still come and meet him in October when he will be doing a workshop from The Mission's House Gallery - taking us through the steps of creating a master piece.
